XP to level is the total experience at your target level minus the total at your current level. In Old School RuneScape, level 99 sits at 13,034,431 XP, so going from 1 to 99 needs all of it; at 100 XP per action that is 130,345 actions. In Minecraft, level 0 to 30 needs 1,395 XP.

About this tool

Grinding a skill or a character level goes faster when you know the size of the job. This calculator reads the published experience curves of Old School RuneScape and Minecraft, or a custom power curve you define for your own game or tabletop system, and reports the XP between your current and target level. Enter the average experience one kill, craft or quest gives and it converts that gap into a count of actions. A level-by-level table shows the running total, so you can see where the curve steepens — in OSRS, roughly half of the XP for level 99 is earned after level 92. The limit: the result assumes a steady XP rate, so bonus experience events, rested XP or rate changes at higher levels are not modelled.

How to use it

  1. Pick the experience curve

Choose RuneScape (OSRS), Minecraft, or Custom curve. Custom shows two extra fields for base XP and growth exponent.

  2. Enter both levels

Type your current level and the level you want to reach. The target must be higher than the current level.

  3. Set XP per action

Enter the average experience one kill, craft, quest or bottle gives you.

  4. Read the totals and table

The headline is the XP gap; the stats give the action count, and the table lists total XP at each level along the way.

Total XP at target level: 13,034,431
Kills or actions needed: 130,345
Levels to gain: 98

  1. Curve: Old School RuneScape
  2. Total XP at level 1 = 0.
  3. Total XP at level 99 = 13,034,431.
  4. XP needed = 13,034,431 − 0 = 13,034,431.
  5. Actions = ⌈13,034,431 ÷ 100⌉ = 130,345.

A maxed skill in Old School RuneScape needs just over 13 million experience; at 100 XP an action that is 130,345 actions.

  1. Curve: Minecraft
  2. Total XP at level 0 = 0.
  3. Total XP at level 30 = 1,395.
  4. XP needed = 1,395 − 0 = 1,395.
  5. Actions = ⌈1,395 ÷ 7⌉ = 200.

Level 30 unlocks the strongest enchanting table offers. At an average 7 XP per bottle o' enchanting that is 200 bottles.

  1. Curve: custom curve
  2. Total XP at level 1 = 0.
  3. Total XP at level 3 = 300.
  4. XP needed = 300 − 0 = 300.
  5. Actions = ⌈300 ÷ 50⌉ = 6.

With 100 × level XP per level, level 1→2 costs 100 and 2→3 costs 200, so 300 XP in total.

How it is calculated

XP needed = Total(target) − Total(current); Actions = ⌈XP needed ÷ XP per action⌉

Total(L) OSRS
⌊¼ × Σ from n = 1 to L − 1 of ⌊n + 300 × 2^(n/7)⌋⌋
Total(L) Minecraft
L² + 6L up to 16; 2.5L² − 40.5L + 360 for 17–31; 4.5L² − 162.5L + 2220 from 32
Total(L) custom
Σ from n = 1 to L − 1 of base × n^exponent, each level rounded

Each game defines experience as a cumulative total at each level. The calculator evaluates that total at both levels and subtracts. The OSRS expression is the one documented by Jagex players on the official wiki and reproduces the in-game table exactly; the Minecraft piecewise quadratic is from the Minecraft Wiki. The custom option treats the cost of each single level as base × level raised to the exponent, which covers linear (1), quadratic (2) and the common 1.5 curves used in many RPGs.

When not to use it

  • Games that give XP on a per-zone or per-expansion table not described by a formula.
  • Plans that rely on double-XP weekends or rested bonuses, which change the rate mid-grind.
  • RuneScape 3 elite skills, which use a separate experience table.

Common mistakes

  • Typing current XP into the level field instead of the level number.
  • Using a Minecraft level 1 start when a fresh player is at level 0.
  • Entering peak XP per action rather than an average that includes downtime.

Frequently asked questions

How much XP is level 99 in Old School RuneScape?

Level 99 requires 13,034,431 total experience. Level 92 is at 6,517,253, which is almost exactly half, which is why players say 92 is half of 99.

Why does Minecraft use three formulas?

Minecraft makes early levels cheap and late levels costly. Levels 0–16 follow L² + 6L, levels 17–31 use 2.5L² − 40.5L + 360, and from 32 upward the cost climbs faster with 4.5L² − 162.5L + 2220.

What exponent should a custom curve use?

An exponent of 1 makes each level cost a fixed extra amount, 2 makes costs grow with the square of the level, and values around 1.5 sit in between. Compare the table with a few known level thresholds from your game to choose.

Does the action count round up?

Yes. A partial kill does not exist, so the number of actions is the XP gap divided by XP per action, rounded up to the next whole action.

Can I go above level 99 in OSRS?

Skills cap at 99, but experience keeps counting to 200 million. The curve continues to virtual level 126, which this calculator accepts as the highest target.

Does dying in Minecraft change the result?

The calculator only measures the gap between two levels. Dying drops most of your experience, so after a death set the current level to what you kept and recalculate.
