Skill Point Calculator

Skill points earned equal the points you start with, plus levels gained times points per level-up, plus any bonus points. In Diablo II, levelling from 1 to 99 at one point per level gives 98, and the twelve quest points bring the total to 110. Subtract points already spent to see how many remain unassigned.

About this tool

RPG players planning a build usually want one number: how many points will this character have at a given level, and how many are still free right now? Games differ in the details, so this calculator takes the rules as inputs instead of hard-coding one title. Set the level the character starts at, the level you are planning for, and how many points each level-up grants. Add points the character begins with and any extra points from quests, tomes or achievements, then enter what has already been spent. The result shows unspent points, the total earned, how much came from levelling alone, and the share already invested. It assumes a flat award per level; games that change the award at certain level brackets need one run per bracket, added together.

How to use it

  1. Set the level range

Enter the starting level (usually 1) and the current or target level you are planning for.

  2. Enter the award per level

Type how many skill points each level-up grants in your game, for example 1 in Diablo II.

  3. Add extra and spent points

Fill in any starting points, bonus points from quests or items, and the points already assigned.

  4. Read the remaining points

The headline shows unspent points; the working lists every step of the sum.

Examples

Diablo II, level 99 with all quests

Starting level
1
Current or target level
99
Points per level-up
1
Points you start with
0
Bonus points (quests, items)
12
Points already spent
0

Result Unspent skill points: 110
Total points earned: 110
Points from levelling: 98
Levels gained: 98
Share already spent: 0%

  1. Levels gained = 99 − 1 = 98
  2. Points from levelling = 98 × 1 = 98
  3. Total earned = 0 + 98 + 12 = 110
  4. Unspent = 110 − 0 = 110

98 level-ups at one point each plus 12 points from Den of Evil, Radament and Izual on Normal, Nightmare and Hell add up to the well-known cap of 110.

Diablo II attribute points at 99

Starting level
1
Current or target level
99
Points per level-up
5
Points you start with
0
Bonus points (quests, items)
15
Points already spent
0

Result Unspent skill points: 505
Total points earned: 505
Points from levelling: 490
Levels gained: 98
Share already spent: 0%

  1. Levels gained = 99 − 1 = 98
  2. Points from levelling = 98 × 5 = 490
  3. Total earned = 0 + 490 + 15 = 505
  4. Unspent = 505 − 0 = 505

The same formula works for stat points: 98 × 5 = 490, plus 15 from three Lam Esen's Tome rewards, gives 505.

Level 30, 2 points a level, 50 spent

Starting level
1
Current or target level
30
Points per level-up
2
Points you start with
3
Bonus points (quests, items)
4
Points already spent
50

Result Unspent skill points: 15
Total points earned: 65
Points from levelling: 58
Levels gained: 29
Share already spent: 76.9%

  1. Levels gained = 30 − 1 = 29
  2. Points from levelling = 29 × 2 = 58
  3. Total earned = 3 + 58 + 4 = 65
  4. Unspent = 65 − 50 = 15

29 level-ups give 58 points; with 3 starting and 4 bonus points the build has 65, so 15 remain after spending 50.

How it is calculated

Unspent = S + (L − L₀) × p + B − Spent

S
points the character starts with
L
current or target level
L₀
starting level
p
skill points granted per level-up
B
bonus points from quests, items or achievements

A character reaching level L from level L₀ has levelled up L − L₀ times, and each level-up grants p points. Adding the starting pool and the bonus points gives the total earned. Subtracting points already assigned leaves the free points. If spending exceeds earnings the inputs are inconsistent, usually a missed bonus source, and the calculator flags the spent field.

When not to use it

  • Games whose award per level changes by level bracket need a separate run per bracket.
  • Systems that level skills by use, as in Skyrim, do not grant a fixed pool per level.

Common mistakes

  • Counting the starting level as a level-up, which adds one level's worth of points too many.
  • Forgetting one-off quest rewards that are granted once per difficulty, not once per game.
  • Mixing skill points and attribute points, which many games award at different rates.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the number of level-ups one less than my level?

A character starting at level 1 has not levelled up yet. Reaching level 99 takes 98 level-ups, so at one point each the levelling total is 98, not 99.

How many skill points does a Diablo II character get?

One per level from 2 to 99, which is 98, plus one from Den of Evil, one from Radament and two from Izual on each of the three difficulties. That is 12 quest points, for a maximum of 110.

Can I use it for attribute or stat points?

Yes. The formula is the same; only the award per level changes. Diablo II gives five attribute points per level, so 98 level-ups give 490, and three Lam Esen's Tome rewards add 15 for 505.

What if my game gives points only every few levels?

Enter the average per level as a fraction, for example 0.5 for one point every two levels, and check the result against the game, since rounding of partial intervals depends on where the range begins.

Why does it reject my spent points?

Spent points higher than earned points mean something is missing from the earned side, often a quest reward, an item that grants points, or a starting pool. Add the missing source in the bonus or starting fields.

Does it handle respec costs?

No. A respec returns spent points to the free pool, so after one set the spent field to whatever is assigned in the new build and the result follows.
